  FAMILY

ACTIVITY

At The New Victory Theater, we want the experiences of our audience members to begin long before they enter our theater and continue long after the last curtain call. Our staff—including members of our award-winning Education Department—created activities that can be used before or after you visit the theater to explore a specific aspect of the production. Working together, your family will gain insight into the talent and hard work it takes to produce a show, while learning something new about one another and creating lasting memories as a family.

To create the incredible acts in Urban, the cast must not only trust and support one another, they also challenge each other to endure longer, jump faster and fly higher. This Family Activity, inspired by the show, should have your family working together—and playfully challenging each other—in no time! All you need is a jump rope, some chalk or household items, and a competitive spirit.

  Challenge #1: Jump Rope Marathon

The amazing performers in Urban show off their talents in a double dutch routine on stage. This is your chance to test your family’s jump rope skills! Name a number of jumps that your competitor(s) must reach consecutively. If they succeed, it is their turn to choose a jump number. How far can you go?

BONUS ROUND: If you are both jump rope masters already, make it more challenging by only jumping on one foot or trying for double jumps!

  Challenge #2: Hop-Scotch Course

Urban features acts that remix neighborhood street games as heart-thumping acrobatic tricks. This next challenge turns the playground game of hop-scotch into an athletic family challenge. Allow one competitor to set an obstacle course out of chalk or items that you have around the house. Your challenge is to hop-scotch (you remember how it goes- two feet, then one foot, then two feet...) through the course without falling. Once successful, turn the tables and create a course for your competitor.

BONUS ROUND: Race through together at the same time, side by side, and see who is victorious!

  Challenge #3: Freestyle Rhyme-Off

Urban cast members have mastered rhythm and rap in addition to their physical feats. Test your wits and rhyming abilities by creating a rap on the fly. Offer a starting word or phrase, and see if your partner can serve a rhyming line back (e.g. First Phrase: write with your feet, Response: poet of the street). Keep serving rhymes back and forth until you run out. The winner is the last person who rhymed successfully! Now switch it up, and have your competitor create the first word or phrase.

BONUS ROUND: If you and your family have flow, try racing to create individual 4 or 8 line rhymes.

New Victory Ultimate Victory: Adapt Your Own Game
Work as a family to create the rules for your own game or make up new rules for a playground or street game that your family has played before.
  Think about:
· What is the goal of the game?
· Do players compete as individuals or teams?

· What are the rules? What is not allowed?
· How will you know who the winner is??
