Rennie Harris was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, and has brought inner
city dance styles like b-boying (commonly known as breakdancing), stepping
and house dancing to the stage. As founder and artistic director of Rennie
Harris Puremovement, Mr. Harris has become a powerful spokesperson for
"street dance" and continues to educate people of all ages around the country
about hip-hop culture and its origins. Rennie Harris Puremovement (RHPM)
was conceived with the vision of sharing an appreciation for diversity, and is
dedicated to preserving and disseminating hip-hop culture through
workshops, classes, lecture-demonstrations, dance residencies, mentoring
programs and public performances.
Mr. Harris has choreographed numerous works and has won such notable
awards as: the Bessie Award for Choreography (for Rome & Jewels - a hip-
hop ballet based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet), the Herb Alpert Award,
and was recently voted one of the hundred most influential people in
Philadelphia of the last 100 years.
