More About The Wolves in the Walls

“Mostly I start the book with the idea and the words, and then Dave takes the words and does magic to them. He's my toughest critic, so if he likes something I know it will work.“
- Neil Gaiman, interview with Harper Collins, Publishers

“We have no bricks and mortar institutionalism to counter, nor the security of a permanent home. All our money and energy can be spent on creating work.”
-The National Theatre of Scotland

“Our best work comes from mistakes and accidents; theatre is too important to take too seriously.”
-Improbable

The original idea for The Wolves in the Walls came from writer Neil Gaiman’s daughter Maddy, who, one night, had a dream that there were wolves in the walls of their house. Maddy's childhood dream inspired her father to collaborate with illustrator Dave McKean to create the wonderful and wildly popular storybook version of The Wolves in the Walls. Long time friends, Gaiman and McKean have worked together on several books for adults and children including The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish, Mirror Mask, Sandman and Coraline.

This creative effort inspired another pair of old friends—Vicky Featherstone and Julian Crouch—to join their two prominent theater companies, The National Theatre of Scotland and Improbable, to bring The Wolves in the Walls to the stage. The final result is a production evident of creative teamwork. Gaiman’s narrative drives the show’s suspenseful and charming appeal while McKean’s artwork inspires the stage designs and the over-all look of the production; The National Theatre of Scotland’s artistic drive and Improbable’s affinity for the unusual transform the piece into a multi-dimensional experience. The Wolves in the Walls is truly thrilling and utterly unique.
