This Professional Learning Lab, led by New Victory Teaching Artist Ben Johnson, invites you to step into the gloriously chaotic world of commedia dell’arte, where mischief, masks and magnificent mishaps transform learning into pure joy! In this laugh-until-your-sides-hurt workshop, you’ll start with the building blocks of physical comedy—mastering perfectly timed pratfalls and exaggerated gestures that get the biggest laughs.
You’ll also dive into commedia’s rich history and experiment with improvisation techniques that bring these timeless archetypes to life, all while building toward your own comedic routine. Along the way, you’ll explore strategies for using humor as a bridge to student confidence, creativity and bold classroom risk-taking. Together, we’ll embrace the beautiful mess of comedy and discover how a strategically-placed banana peel can become an unexpected doorway to profound learning.
Warning: side effects may include uncontrollable giggling and newfound confidence.
These professional development workshops provide a collaborative space for educators to work as artists, learn new art form techniques to bring to their students, and make connections to their classroom goals and units. Each workshop will highlight alignments to the Next Generation Learning Standards, Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts, New York State Arts Standards and National Arts Standards.
All workshops take place in the lower lobby of the New Victory Theater, and eligible participants will receive up to two (2) CTLE credit hours per workshop.
