About the Show

Mirror, mirror on the wall, this Snow White has laughs for all. Follow our feisty heroine as she escapes her maniacally murderous stepmother—with help from a bunch of forgetful forest-dwelling vegans! The well-trod tale of vanity and virtue is ripe for reinvention, now bristling with original songs from a live band of seven storytellers. At once fresh and familiar with tongue (and poisoned apple) planted firmly in cheek, this rustic retelling brings a witty warmth to the Grimm classic and reminds us that even the wicked deserve a chance at redemption.

An absolute delight! My kids’ faces ached from smiling so much.

Things to Know

  1. This will be NIE’s fifth time with us! They were last here alongside Branar Theatre in 2024’s Grand Soft Day, and prior to that they reinvented another classic fairy tale for the New Victory stage, Beauty and the Beast, in 2018.
  2. This rendition of Snow White was devised collaboratively by the artists of NIE and is full of new, creative ideas. For instance, the seven dwarves of the classic fairy tale are reimagined as four “Earthbergers”—an off-the-grid vegan collective who can’t count very well.
  3. Originally scheduled for our 2019-20 Season, Snow White was postponed due to the pandemic shutdown. We’re so excited to welcome NIE back with this show, recast and refreshed for 2025 after a five-year intermission!

The show on stage is just one act of your experience! Come early or stay late for free lobby activities on the day of the show. Then whether you’re building anticipation, continuing the fun or looking for laughs at any time, at-home New Victory Arts Break activities await you whenever and wherever.

About the Artists

New International Encounter (NIE) is a motley crew of multilingual, multinational artists who believe theater is an international language. Bridging backgrounds and boundaries, their productions mix live music with physical theater and tour for up to 200 days a year. Based in both England and Norway, NIE creates new shows in co-production with venues and theater companies across Europe.

Cambridge Junction has been a celebrated producer of live performances for over 20 years. They work extensively with young people and local artists and believe strongly in the importance of removing barriers so everyone can be a part of the creative process.

Tobacco Factory Theatres fosters an inclusive, creative community rooted in their home in South Bristol. They proudly offer creative learning and participation opportunities to 3,000 people each year, with 200 children and adults attending their courses every week.

Three performers holding various instruments and dressed in earth tones and warm clothing stand around a young woman with dark hair sitting on the ground and wearing a green poncho adorned with tassels and a red and white pattern. Another performer with short brown hair and a yellow headband kneels beside the woman and plays a black accordion. The ground is covered by a multicolored rug and pillows.

A woman with dark hair pulled back into an updo wearing a red, tufted, velvet dressing gown kneels before a wooden, full-length mirror frame and holds a satchel in soft yellow lighting. She peers into the satchel with a distressed look on her face. Fences of large sticks stand on either side of the woman. In the background drenched in purple lighting, a gray, upholstered chaise with gold fringe sits on a gray, patterned runner rug leading to the mirror frame.

Ten large sticks are arranged like fences on either side of four performers. One performer wearing a blue knit cap, brown clothing and glasses sits on a block of wood and plays an egg shaker in one hand and holds a double guiro in the other. On the left, a performer with a dark beard wearing a red knit cap and a colorful sweater vest stands playing a double bass. In the center, a performer wearing earth-toned clothing and a yellow knit headband with a blue flower stands and plays a black and white accordion. On the right, a performer wearing a fur hat and loosely-fitting brown clothing plays a ukulele. The background is dark and hazy.

In the foreground, three performers wearing coats are covered in a green wash of dim light as they face away from the audience. In the center of a wooden stage, a spotlight shines on a woman with dark hair wearing a red, tufted velvet dressing gown. A gold chandelier hangs over her head. The woman peers straight ahead through the empty wooden frame of a full-length mirror as she grasps the frame on either side with both hands.
