How Well Do You Know Snow White?

Before you visit the New Victory to see Snow White, learn more about the history of this iconic fairy-tale character!

  • The original story of Snow White dates back to the 19th-century German fairy tale “Schneewittchen,” published in 1812 by the Brothers Grimm. They also wrote many other popular tales including “Hansel and Gretel,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Rumpelstiltskin” and “Cinderella.”
  • Snow White was the first fictional female character to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! Other fictional characters on the Walk of Fame include Kermit the Frog, Winnie the Pooh and Shrek.

  • New International Encounter’s (NIE) production of Snow White isn’t the first time that the fairy tale has graced the New York stage! A theatrical adaptation opened on Broadway in 1912 and starred popular actress Marguerite Clark, who later went on to star in the 1916 silent film adaptation.
  • The German town of Lohr am Main claims a faux-historical connection to the story of Snow White. Mirrors made there in the 1700s were said to be so clear that they always told the truth, and a young local baroness is rumored to have had a domineering stepmother!
  • Perhaps the most famous adaptation of Snow White is the 1937 feature film by Walt Disney Productions. It was the first animated feature and the only film to be honored by the Academy Awards in two successive years. It was adapted into a live-action movie musical earlier this year starring Rachel Zegler!

What makes Snow White at the New Victory unique?

  1. This production of Snow White is an adaptation by NIE.

They worked together as a company to choose which aspects of the source material should stay and what new perspectives should be added. The team worked to incorporate these new themes of environmentalism and the importance of community into the show. (Snow White is also their fifth show on the New Victory stage!)

Snow White doesn’t shy away from complex themes such as vanity, jealousy and manipulation. It respects the intelligence of the children in the audience. Once they realize that this is real storytelling, they move forward in their seats.

  2. The artists of NIE created Snow White through a devising process.

When a show is devised, the theatermakers begin without a set script. They find inspiration in each others’ ideas, found objects, existing stories or just the power of their imagination to build a story. Devising often involves lots of play and experimentation and can include music, movement, dance or a combination of myriad art forms.

Three performers holding various instruments and dressed in earth tones and warm clothing stand around a young woman with dark hair sitting on the ground and wearing a green poncho adorned with tassels and a red and white pattern. Another performer with short brown hair and a yellow headband kneels beside the woman and plays a black accordion. The ground is covered by a multicolored rug and pillows.

  3. NIE’s Snow White features actor-musicians who help to tell the story and set the tone of the adaptation.

When devising the piece, the Snow White team wrote music that differentiates the palace where the Queen lives from the forest where Snow White meets the Earthbergers.

We delved into the blues and jazz world and also mixed in a classical element to bring a regal energy into the mix. Then, in the forest, we worked with folk music and the sound of political folk songs to represent the feel of the Earthbergers and their passionate belief in saving the world.

——Joey Hickman, the show’s co-composer and musical director. He also plays the character of Caleb in the show!
