New Victory LabWorks Professional Development
New Victory LabWorks professional development is bespoke to the Theater for Young Audiences community.
New Victory LabWorks supports artists working in all genres with interest and excitement around making work for kids and families.
The LabWorks community includes NYC-based and national arts professionals—artists, practitioners, educators, presenters and producers—who bring a broad range of experience, and participate in professional development and networking events throughout the year.
New Victory developed workshops with New Victory Theater Season Artists, LabWorks Artists, community members and industry professionals in response to the needs identified by and desires expressed by the LabWorks and Theater for Young Audiences (TYA) communities. If you are interested in knowing more about this season’s professional development line up, please email LabWorks@New42.org.
New Victory LabWorks Drafts
New Victory LabWorks Drafts explores, incubates and invests in new work from within the TYA community. Scripts and projects are selected via a limited duration Call for Submissions and a randomized lottery system.
Drafts Dialogue
Drafts Dialogue is an online community gathering for TYA artists across the nation with new plays in development. Akin to a virtual book club for TYA plays, meetings take place during the last Monday of each month, from 6:30 – 8 pm ET. Each pre-registered participant receives and reads up to two new scripts in advance. At each event, a member of the New Victory Artistic team guides a discussion around the work(s) over Zoom. This provides an opportunity to give early-stage TYA scripts from across the country productive and timely feedback.
Drafts Live
Drafts Live is an in-person, open rehearsal opportunity exclusive to NYC-based artists who wish to see how their narrative engages its intended young audience. Artists are provided up to a six-person ensemble and rehearsal space for a day of new work exploration. The day ends with an intimate, invited sharing and feedback session with a kid-and-family audience.

New Victory LabWorks Draft Series FAQ
Do you accept submissions from individual artists or companies?
New Victory LabWorks is designed to support both individual artists and companies. Payment can be made to an individual or a company. Only individual artists will be selected to participate in the Drafts series.
Can I still submit if I’ve never created a performance for kids and family audiences?
Absolutely! Artists do not need to have prior experience creating work for young audiences. However, you must demonstrate an enthusiasm for work made for kid-and-family audiences, and the work you focus on developing must be made specifically for a kid-and-family audience.
If I am not selected, can I re-submit in a future year with the same submission?
Yes.
Which phase of development should my work be in?
Your work and any projects you focus on may be in any development phase (from initial concept to workshop). Do you have an idea you’ve wanted to explore but lack the time or resources? Submit! We’re always curious to hear what artists are interested in communicating to young audiences. If your projects have received a full production or premiere, but you would like to revisit their development, please indicate this in your submission and describe what further development you are looking to explore.
For Drafts Live, is the in-person space ADA-accessible?
Both the New 42 Studios and the New Victory Theater are accessible. Please let us know if you have any specific requests or needs, and we will do our best to accommodate.
