Genre: Contemporary ballet
Content consideration: Liberation from systemic oppression depicted through falling chains
TOMORROW, the grand finale of the trilogy WITNESS, is a celebration of liberation that aims to empower, educate and inspire change. Using customized trampolines, the piece plays with gravity to demonstrate the resilience of the African-American community.
Genres: Bharatanatyam, hip-hop and chhau
Content consideration: Voiceover explores bodily autonomy
Swords blends Bharatanatyam with hip-hop movement and footwork to examine power. The piece uses mudra storytelling to juxtapose the warrior strength of the Hindu goddess Ma Durga with the modern girl.
Genre: Modern
Metal Garden was last presented at the New Victory Theater in 2003! A reimagined rendition, this whimsical dance joyfully jaunts through a glittering garden inhabited by seven dancers who sparkle in the most unexpected ways.
Get to know the companies performing in New Victory Dance: Program C.
RudduR Dance’s mission is to use contemporary ballet and theatricality to create performances reflective of society. The company, led by New Victory LabWorks Artist Christopher Rudd, investigates themes of the human condition and emphasizes that which unites us. They strive to provide access to dance in society broadly and in communities of the African Diaspora, particularly.
Led by choreographer and New Victory LabWorks Artist Ishita Mili, IMGE Dance (pronounced “image”) is a genre-blurring dance company that unravels traditional Indian and American classical, folk, street and contemporary dance styles to reinvent how movement connects us. The company’s work navigates themes of belonging and home, multiplicity of identity and mythic explanations of reality.
Seán Curran Company’s mission is to promote the development of contemporary dance and to educate the public through innovative, emotionally-moving performances and engagement programs. Founded in 1997 and based in New York City, the company has toured to over 100 venues in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
